In 2025, the Wallace Collection will host Grayson Perry: Delusions of Grandeur, its largest contemporary exhibition, showcasing over 40 new works by Sir Grayson Perry. Featuring ceramics, tapestries, and works on paper, Perry’s pieces respond directly to the Collection’s masterpieces, reflecting its diverse styles and themes. Inspired by the contrast between 18th-century Rococo femininity and the masculinity of arms and armour, the exhibition explores historical gender roles, craft-making, and notions of perfectionism. It juxtaposes intricate handcrafted objects with digital creations, questioning authenticity and the artist’s role in the future. Perry also highlights outsider artists like Aloïse Corbaz and Madge Gill, incorporating a fictional persona, Shirley Smith, who believes she is the rightful heir to the Collection. Opening on Perry’s 65th birthday, the exhibition delves into domestic space, gendered decoration, and the tension between perceived perfection and authenticity. Perry describes the project as a joyful yet challenging reinterpretation of artefacts, while Wallace Collection Director Xavier Bray praises the artist’s ability to provoke thought and offer fresh perspectives.
